Although your smile wouldn’t look the same without them, there is more to your gums than improving your looks. Beyond holding your teeth in place, gums form a protective barrier for your tooth roots. Regrettably, your gums aren’t foolproof to diseases, especially periodontal disease.
While gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in America, it doesn’t have to be like this. Bella Hanono Family Dentistry encourages preventive dental care to keep gum disease in check. But if gum disease has already set in, we provide periodontal treatment to restore your oral health to its former self.
Far too many people neglect gums because they aren’t the stars of the show when smiling or talking. When you open your mouth, teeth are far the most predominant smile feature. But does this mean that gums don’t matter? The answer is a resounding no. Gums are an essential aspect of your oral health, and taking care of them is equally important as maintaining your teeth.
If you ignore oral care, gum disease will creep in, and you will start noticing the below signs and symptoms:
If you notice signs of gum disease, don’t ignore them because it’s only a matter of time before the disease becomes harder to treat. The early stage of gum disease is reversible. At this phase, Dr. Bella Hanono recommends brushing twice a day and flossing daily to clear the infection. Within a few days, you will notice bleeding and swelling of the gums aren’t there anymore.
We recommend root planing and scaling (deep cleaning) if the disease has advanced. Scaling removes plaque below the gum line and on the teeth’s surface. Root planing smooths out the tooth roots to encourage the reattachment of gums onto the teeth.
If gum disease has progressed to periodontitis, we recommend laser treatment to disinfect and remove the diseased tissue. Unlike surgical treatments, laser treatment is minimally invasive, promoting faster recovery because there are fewer wounds to heal.
